Puppy Manners?
So you have gone out and adopted a new puppy. It was love at first sight. Your puppy is the most adorable puppy in the world.You feel quite lucky to have found such a happy, playful, inquisitive little guy that fits into your family great. But did you know that all those little quirks that you find playful and inquisitive, while cute now that he or she is ten pounds, can become very bad habits once they have grown into adulthood and weight more than sixty to eighty pounds. I used a large breed example,but the same can be true for a full grown twenty or thirty pounds. Even a five to ten pound companion, with poor mannerscan reek havoc on the public.
Now is the time to start thinking about manners training. A well behaved dog can make a mundane walk around your neighborhood a dream. Its cute that the puppy is pulling on his leash now, but when he is older and has more weight behind him, it can become a hazard. A well behaved companion can even accompany you in some neighborhood stores. Having a pet that is well behaved will be less likely to cause incidents in public. If your puppy knows how to sit on command and does not run from you, even if playfully, he or she is less likely to be hit by a vehicle that may not have seen them. That is just one example but there are many other reasons for having early puppy training.
A few other reasons include reducing the incident of fighting when meeting other dogs. I would consider this a light reason, because bad manners is a small reason behind fights. Usually fights can be about territory,food,toys or the owners themselves. Dogs can become protective of things they consider their own.Puppies tend to want to push their luck and be somewhat overzealous when they meet a new companion. That is usually when a fight happens.
Or say your puppy likes to nip at your hands, really at this stage he is probably just testing out his boundries. But if this is not corrected it can turn into a very big problem.It is not just the possibilty of them biting another person, which in some cases can cause insurance rates to go up. But if for any reason they are out without identification and get picked up by animal services, they may not be returned to you as quickly as they could.A biting dog make attempting to scan for a microchip quite difficult. Dogs that bite tend to be a little more difficult to handle. And at that point he or she will be surrounded by strangers and in a strange place full of other dog and cat smells that may be stressful. A dog that is a little scared is more likely to bite then a calm pet with manners. It would be best to curb this behavior while they are young and impressionable.
What if your dog likes to jump up on you. May seem harmless while a puppy, but once again you have to think about the future. If you are out for a walk and they jump onto someone holding something hot or heavy, That can increase the likeliness if injury not only to your pet but to the person as well.When they are older, you want to be able to take them into public without them jumping on the people around.While someone like myself could care less if a dog jumped on me, there are other people that may make a large spectacle of the situation. Better to curb this situation sooner rather than later.
Finding puppy classes in your area is relatively easy. You can try any number of internet search engines,or call your local veterinarian to see if they have anyone in particular they suggest. You can contact your local animal services to see if they are offering anything and you can ask your friends if they have any suggestions. In all puppy manner classes will be good not only for you but for your new companion. Having a well mannered pet can make the years you have together more special and safer.
