Pillows are cloth cases that are stuffed with soft material such as cotton or foam. They are used to give support to the head while sleeping. On the other hand, throw pillows are decorative pillows that are used mainly on couches and are not used for supporting the head. Throw pillows are decorated by some motifs or design and they blend with the décor of the room. Throw pillows come in different shapes and sizes.

Throw pillows may be given personalized look by incorporating company logos or photos on them. Cloth used for casing these pillows range from soft cottons to silky velvets. Pillows that are designed in shapes of flowers and are colorful, add a new look to old couches. Embroidered pillows combined with gold velvet tapestry look elegant.

Neck pillows are also placed on couches and can have a design matching the throw pillows. Silk thread tassels that are of the same color as the velvet can be used to enhance throw pillows and look decorative.

Middle Eastern throw pillows are popular for their exquisite floral embroidery. Colors used are predominantly popular in this region. These pillows are soft and are used on either coaches or chairs. An array of throw pillows on a bed also imparts an elegant look to the bedroom.

Various designs can be incorporated while making throw pillows. Holiday prints can be used if pillows are meant for Christmas celebration. Animal or cartoon motifs may appeal to kids and can be used as throw pillows. Fabric paint also can be used to decorate throw pillows. It can be painted by either brush or stencil. Some of them could be sponge painted or rubber-stamped.

Tassels and cording are other ways of decorating throw pillows. They can be sewed to the side or seams of the pillow. Photos can be transferred onto a throw pillow.

Throw pillows can be obtained as readymade products or they can be custom made. Most stores dealing in upholstery material have a range of throw pillows.
