The Spirit of Nature

Every time when I walk by the Cartier’s Shoppe, I would stop and watch carefully the typical and classical figure of leopard displaying in the windows. I don’t know why I love this cat-like animal so much. Maybe I envy him, who has the privilege to run, to leap and to spring in the wide grassland. They are smart, speeding and to some extend proud and aloof.

In the year of 1914, the first image of leopard came into being under the direction of Ms. Duchamp. The woman, who enjoyed her reputation all over the world, was family friend with the Mother of Channel, Coco Channel. I am afraid; they shared the talent in art as well as the friendship in real life. Coco Channel introduced male style into women’s clothing; meanwhile, Ms. Duchamp whose nickname was occasionally “leopard” succeeded inviting leopard into the jewelry world. 

When the short hair women handed in the draft, smoking and wearing a pearl necklace, the jewelry world shocked for the vivid image. Making fully usage of contract between black agates and white but sparking diamonds, the brooch relieved the well-known secret that Ms. Leopard was really born with extraordinary talent in jewelry design. The jumping leopard wants to across the grassland, whose posture was ready for his prey as well. Touching the neat outlines, you can sense the masculine as well. The success of leopard actually went beyond imagination. Even our noble Duke of Winsor showed great affection and interest in this vivid leopard and ordered a pair of glass from Cartier, on which legs there are two leopards jumping.

Beside the typical leopard figure, generally Ms. Leopard invited other wild animals into the jewelry world as well. For example, the owls were displayed on the lady’s bags. Snakes and crocodile were learned from about their posture and wind-up lines to make necklaces and bracelets. Why so many people prefer the fur pattern of leopard? Why so many people show great interesting in Cartier’s animal-shaped jewelries? In my opinion, the two questions share the same answer: people prefer ornaments with trace of Mother Nature. The color, the shapes, the outlines of their bodies as well as the patterns of fur correctly satisfied the underlying needs of human being.
